The Facebook Creed? Racism’s Bad, Bashing Religion Is Good -A perspective

do-you-have-facebook

Recently, in a column for the Fox Forum called “Muhammad Cartoons vs. Piss Christ” I compared the insult Muslims feel when they see a drawing of Muhammad to the hurt Christians felt when an artist photographed a crucifix in a jar of urine, called it “Piss Christ” and received a tax-funded monetary award from the National Endowment of the Arts.

The point I tried to make is that just because the First Amendment allows you to say something doesn’t mean you should say it. Freedom comes with responsibility, which includes tactfulness when discussing the revered symbols of another’s religion.

Sure you are free to hurl insults – but remember the purpose of criticism is persuasion, and no one has ever been persuaded by first being insulted. Criticism can be made of Islam and Christianity without denigrating either’s most sacred symbols.

As Americans we should fight like hell for the right to draw a picture of Muhammad, but then choose not to.

This issue is hot today because some folks short on good criticism and long on juvenile insult declared May 20 “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.” I wonder why they didn’t include “Everyone Piss On a Crucifix Day,” too? That they didn’t do just that, suggests that this is not a pro-First Amendment movement, but a purely an anti-Muslim movement.

There are two Facebook pages battling it out. One is called “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.” It has about 79,000 members. The other protests with “Against Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.” It has about 90,000 members.

So here’s my question: Why does Facebook allow a page whose purpose is to spread hate for a religion? After all, Facebook used to ban activity for no other reason than the author was home-schooled (and that’s some weird priorities right there).

A Facebook spokesperson defended the company’s decision to not ban the “Draw Muhammad” page to FoxNews.com earlier this week:

“Groups that express an opinion on a state, institution, or set of beliefs — even if that opinion is outrageous or offensive to some — do not by themselves violate our policies.”

But compare that to this quote from an interview with a Facebook spokesman last year with Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper. Things were different when the topic was not anti-religion pages, but about pages that include racism:

“However, there is no place for content that is threatening, abusive, hateful, or racially or ethnically objectionable on the site and Facebook will remove any such content that violates our Terms of Use when it is reported… We have already removed a number of groups that violated these terms and we are continuing to be vigilant, immediately removing further postings when we become aware of them.”

I see the Facebook matrix: “Racism is bad, but bashing religion is good.”

Facebook also said this to FoxNews.com about the “Draw Muhammad” page:

“When a group created to express an opinion devolves into threats or hate speech, we will remove the threatening or hateful comments and may even remove the group itself.”

Hey Facebook – have you seen the two pages today? They are both a cesspool of hateful anti-religious commentary, devoid of useful criticism and swimming with the worst of distance-induced Internet hatred and nastiness.

If these pages don’t violate Facebook’s rules against hate speech, you can’t violate them.

Both pages have been taken over by anti-religious zealots whose purpose is to stir up anger for the sake of eliciting an even angrier response – all heat and no light. The folks posting the hate have the advantage of hiding whatever it is they hold sacred, so that no one can employ their own tactics against them. Cowards.

Both pages are filled with drawings, manipulated photos and commentary showing all religious leaders in acts of bestiality, pedophilia and outrages claims to calamities in history that religion couldn’t possibly be held accountable for.

Even if you’ve read hateful speech, you’ve still probably never read such blind, ignorant rage as is existent on these pages. Both pages should be taken down immediately, but they won’t be.

Facebook has obliterated civilized discourse.

Daily Times Pay Your Employees!

In Miscellaneous on May 31, 2010 at 7:08 am

By Nabiha Mehar

[A story broken by Nabiha.  Daily Times –  A so called champion of Civil Liberties, secularism,  enlighten moderation, human rights, anti religion ideology & NGOs /  Ahmadi supporter news paper , has two faces]

Did anyone else think it was impossible for Daily Times− a propaganda tool and mouthpiece for the Governor of Punjab, which doesn’t even deserve to be called a newspaper− to get worse?

To sink to the depths it has sunk to now? I happen to know that many of the employees haven’t been paid a penny since the editorial regime change from Najam Sethi to Rashid Rahman, which has become a perpetual excuse given to the ones who have asked for their basic right: their salary. I have written this to the letters to the editor to some newspapers but so far, no one has published it.

There’s a very simple reason why: they all do it, at least periodically. I cannot think of one newspaper that hasn’t delayed/denied payment. Sometimes, it can take months for writers to obtain even meagre sums, basically the amount they end up spending calling up the office and begging for what they were promised. And it most certainly isn’t particular to newspapers in this nation.

Those of us who have been in the workforce for even a few years know that even when your own relatives promise to pay you, the chances of getting what you deserve are not exactly high. And the richer the person, the lower the chances of ever seeing a penny, at least in Lahore. It’s a sad reflection of what being Punjabi is.

One my cousins, who worked for MTV Pakistan, was also a victim of this. Actually, let’s just say that most people I know have been a victim of this other than the elitist brats who work for dad or have pulled lots of strings to get comfy jobs, robbing the deserving who don’t have connections of their futures.

Anyway, she coined a phrase that remains stuck in my mind: “the inshallah syndrome.” This nation, by and large, is stricken with this syndrome, as evidenced by those of us frustratingly trying to get work done. Some of my own students, instead of getting organised and working properly, also love this term. Plenty of times I’ve asked right before a paper is due if they’re working on it or are finished with their rough drafts. The replies that frustrate me the most are from the ones who think that saying “inshallah” and writing a rant the night before will be sufficient.

My point is that there are many of us who have been victims of this “inshallah syndrome” when it comes to payment. This is especially true for those of us who are in the education industry or the media. But what’s truly sad is the fact that the majority of people who are deprived of their basic human right are too scared to speak up.

They are too scared to say a thing knowing, full well, that the Punjabi elite, the affluent and influential who run all these industries, will malign them or ruin their careers. In this case, as in many others, silence is violence. This systemic exploitation must stop, and the only way we can do so is by speaking up and making a stink. I realise not everyone’s brave enough to take a stand, but those of us who are crazy enough need to speak up on their behalves.

Daily Times pay your employees. You’re disgusting enough as it is.

PS: And now the WorldCall employees are not being paid. One more evil corporation. There’s a very good reason why I refuse to submit my work to newspaper, even when they ask. They refuse to give you a cheque or cash in hand, and then they try and get away with it. I’d rather be read for free on line than give anything to an organisation refusing to pay me. I’d rather not be paid voluntarily than go through the drama, especially with organisation that can afford it but just don’t…

Bhutto didn’t make any mistake – Point of View

In Anti Ahmadiies on May 30, 2010 at 8:20 pm

By Muhammad Amjad Rashid

The recent killings of AHMADIS, a minority religion in Pakistan is surely very bad and every citizen of Pakistan condemns this. The Punjab government has definitely raised the spirits of the terrorists especially “SIPAAH-E-SAHABAH”. But it is strange that media has played its “EXTRA POSITIVE ROLE” in this situation and this “EXTRA POSITIVE ROLE” has become “EXTREME NEGATIVE” role from the prospective of our religion and from the prospective of our love to PROPHET MUHAMMAD (S.A.W.W).

I am also strange that media persons criticized ZULFIQAR ALI BHUTTO and even strange that in LUBP also, some people have said that it are the “GRAVE MISTAKE” of  ZULFIQAR ALI BHUTTO to declare AHMADIS the non-Muslims. Some say that it is the ERROR, FAULT or WRONG DEED of ZULFIQAR ALI BHUTTO to make AHMADIS non-Muslims according to constitution 1973.

It is true that terrorism is the root of the evil and every person, every sect and every RELIGION has freedom to adopt its own theories, believes or religious doctrines but after all we are Pakistani and Muslims. We are the sole nuclear power in whole Islamic world. We have conducted the single most successful OIC conference in Pakistan (Lahore) in Bhutto’s regime in 1974. Israel thinks Pakistan to be the biggest threat for it and JEWS even bigger than IRAN & ARABIAN GULF countries. We are proud of it today and it is mostly because of the efforts of ZULFIQAR ALI BHUTTO.

AHMADIS have their own 2 big sects and one of its sect was distributing its literature with FOREIGN JEW & CHRISTIAN resources constantly in Pakistan in which it was clearly written that “THE LAST PROPHET OF ALLAH IS HAZRAT MIRZA AHMAD QADIYANI”.

For the information of the readers, it was continued from almost 1950 till Bhutto’s government arrived. The students of BZU MULTAN & NISHTAR MEDICAL COLLEGE MULTAN were on the tour of JHANG where AHMADIS gave their literature and written AHMADI DOCTRINE to them. Students refused to take it then AHMADIS tried to give it by force which resulted in a protest of the students where the students were tortured. It was also a big “TERRORISM” of that time.

It was very irritating for the whole public of Pakistan and Pakistani public was blessed with a true leader ZULFIQAR ALI BHUTTO in that time. It was very bad for the Muslims of Pakistan to see the literature and ideologies in which HAZRAT MUHAMMAD (S.A.W.W) was not the last prophet of ALLAH but it was MIRZA AHMAD QADIYANI. It was more irritating that the 12 IMAMS were criticized in that literature along with ALI IBN E ALI TALIB which is thought to be the REAL INSPIRATION in every sect of Muslims.
AHMADIS didn’t apologized on that “TERROR ATTACK” and they continued their work more bravely so it was the need of the time to control the conflict and further battle between MUSLIMS & AHMADIS and it was a great challenge for ZULFIQAR ALI BHUTTO. PPP & whole nation at that time. All political parties, the representatives of all sects and all parties whether religious or not, were being gathered by ZULFIQAR ALI BHUTTO. It was day & night work for them all and finally they achieved a MILESTONE in the history of this world that they made “DEFINITION” of the “MUSLIM”.

The definition is simple and it is proved from the HOLY QURAN. According to Pakistan constitution 1973, the Muslim is that one who believes in the oneness of ALLAH & who believes that PROPHET MUHAMMAD (S.A.W.W) is the last prophet of ALLAH. Which ever sect or party don’t believes that HAZRAT MUHAMMAD (S.A.W.W) is the last prophet of ALLAH is not Muslim no matter whether he believes him (s.a.w.w) as prophet but not the last. So it was the big achievement of the ZULFIQAR ALI BHUTTO indeed not a mistake and this point must be remembered by every writer and reader here.

Here I don’t mean that one should AHMADIS but my point is only that according to the LAW of Pakistan

1)      AHMADIS can’t give their AZAAN in loud speaker.                                                                                                                                                        2)      AHMADIS can’t declare their “WORSHIP PLACE” as “MOSQUE”.                                                                                                                             3)      AHMADIS can’t declare themselves as “MUSLIM”.                                                                                                                                                       4)      AHMADIS can’t publish their literature publically.                                                                                                                                                       5)      AHMADI is a minority religion in Pakistan.

SO my point is only that please don’t say them “AHMADI MUSLIMS” and don’t say their religious places and their worship places as “MOSQUE”. They are victimized by terror attacks and they are innocent in this situation it is true.

They are citizens of Pakistan and they have right to have their own faiths and believes. . But it is our responsibility to state the real truth. We should not forget that it is written in the HOLY QURAN about PROPHET MUHAMMAD (S.A.W.W) “THE KHATAM UN NABBIYEEN” i.e. THE LAST PROPHET WHO HAS ENDED THE SERIES OF THE PROPHETS, so we should condemn the terrorism but we should not forget our limits.

We are with our AHMADI brothers in this time of distress for them it was really great shock for whole the nation. Islam never taught this. PUNJAB GOVERNMENT should stop backing the “SIPAAH-E-SAHABA” and it should take strict actions against terrorists and all religions should be safe in Pakistan.

Facebook: Social Networking or Social Engineering?

In Facebook Conspiracy on May 28, 2010 at 6:35 am

By Mirza Yawar Baig

The big question is, ‘What is social networking and how is it useful?’

Of course you will hear the usual bleating saying, ‘It is so nice to know what my sister is doing….blah, blah.’

So ask this person, ‘Why can’t you send your sister an email asking what she is doing and she can respond to you. Or even better, if you can, call your sister and talk to her.’

But no, I must talk to my sister in a space where it is not only the sister who is listening but almost anyone who cares to listen, even if that person is a total stranger. So is it about your concern for your sister or is it something else?

So also in this space are pictures which really have no place outside the home – like the pictures showing you hugging your sister or wife or whoever! And so on and so on. I don’t think I need to describe all that there is to people who put it there in the first place.

Yes, of course there are controls. Tell me all about them. Tell me also how come almost nobody uses them. How many Facebook profiles do you know who have the maximum control activated where only their immediate family can see them? And of course in the end, all control is only as good as the techies and geeks on the Facebook site allow. After all they can access all that information anyway.

So what is really being achieved by Facebook, Twitter and so on? (Twitter?? Whoever coined that term was clever. Talk about under the belt. Who twitters? A twit!! – but then I suppose a twit doesn’t know that he is a twit, right?)

So what is achieved?

What is achieved is what would be the equivalent of peeping in through your window. Wanting to know what you are doing all the time. I want to know what you are doing all the time and I want you to know what I am doing all the time.

Intrusion into privacy when it is done against your will is unpleasant. So what is better? Get you into a state of mind where you will volunteer to tell people all about your internal organs on your own. See the change? An intruder is an intruder only when he intrudes against your will. If you invite him in, then he is a guest, not an intruder. Same person, same you but different rules. And that’s what it is all about, the rules of engagement.

So is it ‘social networking’ or is it ‘social engineering?’

The purpose is to change the rules of the society. Break barriers. Destroy the boundaries that protect us.

And where does this lead to? Addiction and intoxication. Addiction to seeing what others are doing and telling others what you are doing on a daily, hourly, minute by minute basis. And being intoxicated with the false feeling that you are so interesting that people are really interested in what you are doing. Not realizing or willing to believe that these are the actions of other intoxicated people.

You don’t like the word ‘intoxication’? Just don’t log onto your Facebook or Twitter account for two days and monitor your heartbeat, blood pressure, tremor in your mouse, whatever and you will see what I mean.

And all this for what? What is achieved with the time that you spend reading about other’s adenoids and telling them about yours? Incidentally I know what adenoids means and that you don’t talk about them. But let us not mention what facebookers really talk about!

So what did you achieve? Just ask yourself this question, ‘What did I achieve by being on Facebook and Twitter (or whichever of these infernal social networks you are on) over the past month, year or whatever period.’

Remember this is a serious question because you Muslim/ah are spending your time (life) doing it. And that makes it among the first questions that you will have to answer to Allah. So what did you achieve? Prepare the answer. You will need it.

Social networking is social engineering
.

Its purpose is to change the values and ethics of people. This is done, in its most benign form, to encourage you to indulge more and more in the consumerist society that is all consuming. We think we are the consumers. But we are in reality the consumed. Just think, how many of you buy things, see shows, go to restaurants (and other places), like or dislike things because of campaigns on Facebook and Twitter? See what is happening? Your minds are invaded, your thoughts are influenced, and consequently your actions are manipulated and you may not even realize it.

Today Muslims the world over are very angry with the latest offensive of the Facebook. But an impulsive reaction will hardly do us any good. Just staying off of the offensive site for one day, as many have advocated, will only highlight our capitulation to it.

It is time we rethink what are we doing with our lives and say no to social engineering. It is time to get off of Facebook, Twitter, and other similar sites that are destroying us from within.

Every nation displays their military hardware on different occasions. The basic purpose to perform such an act is to dispel a silent message to the enemy to “layoff”. Darwin rightly stated “it is survival of the fittest” so in foreign policy determinants being fit (economically and militarily) will guarantee your survive on the world map.

Pakistan is no exception to when it comes to dealing with Realpolitik as she faces a rouge neighbor in shape of India. Pakistan fought two major (1965 & 1971) and three minor wars(1948 Kashmir, Siachen 1984 & Kargil 1999) with India but all of them were fought with conventional weapons. Whenever there would be a crises situation around the world, former president of U.S, Bill Clinton, would ask his chiefs, which naval aircraft carrier is near to the hot zone thus proving the importance of battle ships in U.S foreign policy.

India triggered nuclear arms race in south-Asia back in 1974 when she detonated nuclear devices code named “Smiling Buddha” in pokhran range thus compelling Late Primer Z.A. Bhutto to state that, “we will eat grass but will built an atomic bomb”.

Pakistan being a small country with limited depth in geography also had to adopt a profound strategy to limit Indian in terms of rash aggression. Bhutto called a secret meeting of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (P.A.E.C) and other related nuclear scientists in multan back in 1974-75 and gave them his piece of mind.

Some of them gave him 8 to 10 years time by adopting plutonium route which was way too difficult. Puzzled and quizzed for the time duration of making a bomb. Bhutto was approached by Dr. Abdul Qadeer khan and put forward a Uranium route for making a bomb in sharp 6 years. Bhutto eyes sparked and gave him the go ahead with the name “Project-706”.

It is an open secret that Pakistan duged tunnels in chaghi and kharan by P.A.E.C up till 1980 did cold testing of its bomb between 1982 and 1984. Some conspiracies even go to the extent of saying that, for hot tests the devices were shifted to china where it had a 100% success rate. 80’s was the time when U.S president Ronald Regan would personally give guarantees to the loud heard senator, John glen and the rest of congressmen criticizing Pakistan nuclear program.

Pakistan moved silently and tested its F-16’s in wind tunnels as to see the performance of outfitter pods for carrying nuclear devices.

In the whole affair Israel moved fast and Mossad dispatched parcel bombs around the globe to component suppliers of Pakistan nuclear program. In a joint plan they even collaborated with India to strike at the heart of Khan Research Laboratory to destroy the crown jewels of Pakistan in a repeat strike plan of Osirak plant. Again a message was conveyed silently by former ambassador Agha Shahi and both refrained from attempting such an act of aggression.

In 1998 India fired “Prithvi missile” and balance of power tilted towards India. Pakistan reciprocated and fired “Ghori missile”. Later India did 5 hot tests of nuclear devices up to 40 kt yield. Pakistan was given threats every day by BJP leaders in India but Pakistan kept its nerves cool. After more than 17 days and upholding intense pressure by Americans Pakistan reciprocated and detonated five nuclear devices in the Chagai Hills in the Chaghai district, Balochistan. This operation was named Chagai-I.

Since that day Pakistani nation have kept their heads held high but such a scenario was short lived. Our so called leaders have let us down and we irrespective of being a nuclear power nation have been sliced to a status of a paper tiger.

We have forgotten “yom-e-takbir”, the day when we took out our crown jewels from the basement and showed it to the world. Yes, we the Pakistanis have no designs of conquering India or disturbing world peace but we prepare ourselves “not on our enemy’s preparations but his intention”. It is high time to unite Pakistan and not to further divide it. Our enemy is shred and dividing us on ethnic lines and we have to thwart this danger from roots.

May ALLAH be with Pakistan.(Aameen)
